Bourne United Charities

Bourne United Charities is a charity formed from bequests and endowments left over the centuries for the benefit of Bourne. Their aim is to provide financial help and housing, and to protect and manage park land and historic buildings in Bourne.

The charity looks after several historic buildings in town, along with the Wellhead Park (including St Peter's Pool) and Abbey Lawn. They also provide 12 almshouses in the town and provide grants for local community projects and other worthy causes. Furthermore, they provide gardening allotments for those without gardens of their own.

The buildings managed by the charity include The Red Hall (the official meeting place of BUC), Baldock's Mill (a heritage centre and museum), Shippon Barn (used by Guide and Scot organisation), The Wellhead Cottage (leased out to a grounds person), Almshouses (12 properties located on West Street) and a number of leased properties in the town.

The charity is often praised for the great job they do in keeping the grounds of the Wellhead Park and Abbey Lawns looking clean and tidy all year round. The charity provides a groundsman to look after these spaces and regularly undertakes vital maintenance tasks such as tree care, grass cutting and removing algae from St Peter's Pool and the Bourne Eau.

Bourne United Charities generate much of their income through a number of leased properties that they have in Leytonstone and Bourne, along with hiring out The Red Hall (this can be used for weddings and other functions) and charging nominal rent for leasing buildings that are owned by the charity.

The charity is fundamental to Bourne as it provides vital funding and relief for organisations and community groups in the town, as well as financial help for individuals who have found themselves in difficult circumstances. A committee of 15 Trustees meets monthly to make decisions regarding where funding should be spent.
